Default Headlight thumb wheel not working

The thumb wheel on my headlight switch doesn't work right, with the lights on they don't move up and down, but if I set it to 2 and then turn the lights off then on they move down, if I set them back to 0 and then turn the lights off then on they move back.

I have had the bumper off and checked if I had any trapped wires and all seems to be fine, any ideas would be appreciated.

The lights to a self test each time you turn them on, ie they go up & down to the level set. Check inside the light units to see if the ball & sockets have become dislodged.

Pop the lsm out and check the plug for corrosion...
Then check for loom chaffing over the engine bay members...

Well I didn't know that ! We learn something every day. These fine cars never cease to amaze me. They probably have refinements I will never find. Sophistication !!

Cheers, but would the self test work if the ball had become dislodged? i have the bumper off already so will pop into the garage and take a good look tomorrow.

Couldn't see any chafed wires i looked as far as i could up the loom and it seemed ok, will take a further look just in case, i didn't check the LSM though forgot about that. As i had water in the footwell that may be it, Cheers.

How do you know it is not the switch itself, easiest thing to try first. Remove the LSM, and unplug the ribbon cable and try any switch, the fog switch makes no odds for testing.

Switch works for everything but the thumb wheel I tested the fogs because I replaced the broken one which is when I found out the thumb wheel wasn't working.

Will be looking into it further in the morning and will report back If I figure it out.

Cheers All.

Had another look this morning, joints are where they are meant to be, LSM is fine as far as I can see no corrosion I took the PCB out to check and it's all clean.

I did however discover that if I move the wheel and wait about 30 seconds the lights adjust?? The car has been parked in the garage for a while with the battery disconnected, maybe not enough power and it needs charging? The stereo and everything else comes on so not sure. Does the engine need to be running for it to work properly?

When my driver's side headlight stopped working, i too checked all the motors and connectors etc but the problem, as already mentioned was that the wiring loom had been rubbing on the joint in the metal work and 1 wire was snapped and another almost through. A quick repair job and all was well again and some rubber tubing was fixed to the joint so that it cant happen again .
