Help and advice needed.

Went for tracking today but garage mechanic says it is not worth doing until the
steering inner rack ends are changed due to wear, phoned Rimmers to check on parts and told that they are not a separate item and the whole steering assembly has to be changed at £343 +VAT.
By the time labour is added and any other related parts if necessary then the car may have to go as it seems it wont be worth it.
Has anyone come across this before and are there other suppliers that have the required parts, love the car but there comes a time when enough is enough.

Shocking advice from rimmers, but hey, everybody makes mistakes. You can easily buy inner and outer track rods, but you'll need a tool to remove or fit the inner ones because there are often no flats on them. Be wary of the Ford Galaxy ones. They do fit, but the stud depth is longer than the R75 ones, and it'll sit proud of the steering rack flange meaning the outer track rod has to be screwed further onto the inner one to achieve the same overall length.

20 years plus. There's no inherent fault on R75 racks. Dried out seals will kill them. The main issue was play in the inner track rod joints, and Rover never sold the rods as a spare part, insisting the rack had to be replaced. Thankfully the aftermarket does sell inner track rods.
