Maybe its a ploy by the government to speed up the process to rid the roads of petrol and diesel motors by selling low grade fuel.

A customer has a 1972 Rover 3500 P6. It has a high compression engine and is tuned to run on High octane fuel, if he uses Super Market high octane fuel it always pinks but on branded fuel it is fine. He has even tried Tesco's 99 and though it is marginally better than some it still pinks.
In his view the best ones to use are BP, Shell and Texaco. |

I ran both on LPG and as LPG is circa 97 to 99 Octane both engines loved it. Tickover was smooth as silk and could be as low as 300 rpm. In contrast both engines on petrol were lumpy and required a lower tickover rpm of closer to 500 to not cut out. Even then the would “hunt” all the time. So not surprising that with diesel a higher cetane rating gives smoother running. I do therefore think that as my cdti does not run as well on Tesco’s fuel as on Shell that the Tesco’s stuff is lower cetane. |

I'm convinced my V6 runs more quietly on Vpower - I certainly get better economy which is probably worth the additional at-pump cost. I've tried Tesco Momentum a few times and each time have had dismal economy compared to other brands.
