I know nothing about how a pc works. If I change a hard drive I'd not know how to set it up and as windows 7 came pre installed I'd have no idea how to get the operating system and I'd have no idea if the hard drive was compatible with the mother board.
alas I have no one that I can trust to sort out the pc if it goes wrong, so for me, it requires me to replace it as a complete unit when I want to "upgrade" macafee2 |

Had this laptop around 3 yrs now, will replace it if it becomes faulty beyond a cost effective repair. It's a Toshiba Satellite running Windows 10 so ok at the moment. I do have an issue though, on this site, those who have 'moving' avatars appear having the avatars jumping around out of position.

Interestingly, I would not consider a change of OS or had drive to be an upgrade. To me, the former is a feature change and the latter just adding additional consumables. We upgrade the games PC every 18 months to 2 years (that is one or more of motherboard, CPU and graphics card). Other PCs less often. My oldest laptop is now about 10 years old and the youngest about 2. I just adapt their software and application to suit the available processing power. |

My HP desktop is over 10 yrs old. Was a decent spec when i got it and have upgraded RAM, fan and OS as well as regular house keeping (remove rubbish, clean, defrag etc). As I don't use it for gaming it's fine, and I use the tablet more now, although a desktop is better if serious work needs to be done.

SSD swap is something I've been planning to do with Laptop and PC, the prices mentioned seem cheaper than they used to be. What make and where to you recommend sourcing SSD?

Have two Towers but don't use those anymore, one of which was overclocked with a 454g copper heatsink on the processor.
Bought a 17" Acer laptop 4 years ago which does me nowadays. 1TB hard drive, 16Gb memory and 4Gb graphics card. I do game on it but didn't allow the upgrade from windows 8.1 to 10.

I'm not really a PC kind of bloke tbh, luckily for me ... my brother in-law custom builds them for a living so I benefit from his craft every time he visits, my ACER aspire has been modded and upgraded soooo many times over the years to the point where it out performs many laptops costing £1500+, or so he tells me, i'm a bit of a technophobe and PC's just don't interest me in the slightest, as long as I can get on the 'bay' and forums like this... I'm a happy bunny.

Happily I work in IT so I just make use of various cast-offs. Most offices ditch anything older than 3 years if it has a problem, many go for recycling but if two broken ones can be cannibalised to make one good one then I'm happy.
In terms of operating system, I like to keep with the latest Windows versions, partly because its what I'm working with and partly because although I like Win 3.1, Win 95, Win 97, Win 2000, Win XP, Win 7 etc. I reckon Windows 10 is superb. Hardware wise I have never bothered upgrading bits until I fitted SSDs in our laptops last year - my word they make a difference!
