Rover 75 2.0cdt, vin M152088, 26/04/2000, starting problems

Hello fellow Rover drivers,

can anyone help me why my Rover 75 won't start? When I turn the ignition key nothing happens, the dashboard lights up but the starting engine won't turn. This is what I already tried: Checked the DDE plenum chamber for water --> dry, switched similar relays, checked the starter engine which seems to work fine, tried to start with a booster, checked all fuses, went into the dashboard diagnostic and did a dashboard test, tried to start with both keys with enough time between attempts,...
I'm starting to get a bit desperate,... could it be the EWS? I've heard that maybe a code between the EWS and DDE is lost....???

Anyone an idea what could be wrong and how to check/solve it?

Hi Kristof, if the ignition switch is turned to position two, and the starter LT terminal supplied with 12v, does the car then start?

In terms of what happens when the key is turned in the ignition, the sequence is as follows, the key transponder sends a datagram to the EWS, if the EWS sees both the fixed and variable code as correct, it then allows the car to be cranked.

If the car cranks and does not start, this could be due to the rolling code between the EWS and DDE4 being lost, but if the code from the transponder is not seen by the EWS, then nothing happens.

Does your car have a sunroof?

Hello Brian, thanks for the reply. I tried to start the car with the ignition key in pos. 2 and then shorted the starter with a screwdriver. The starter turned but the engine woulden't fire up. How can I check if these codes are lost? I don't think the problem is the transponder in the key since the car won't start with both keys.
The car doesn't have a sun roof.
I had the same problem a few months ago but after a few days the car suddenly started again. My wife told me that it had happened a few times before, turning the ignition key two, three times with no response and then suddenly the rover started fine,.....

Could it be the crankshaft sensor. My son had similar problem.

No, I replaced the crankshaft sensor 2 years ago. When it's this sensor the car mostly won't start when the engine is warm. When it cools down it will start again.
Could it maybe be the relay of starter engine....????

Fuel pump or pumps ???

Try to hear if they are working. In the fuel filler cap and under the bonnet.

How much fuel do you have in the tank?? Best results with half full or more.

Hi, the tank is still half full. Last weekend I put a 12v lightening bulb between the starter engine to check if it gets any signal when trying to start the engine. The starter engine doesn't get any signal... I think the problem is or with the EWS or maybe the "rolling code" got lost and my keys are no longer recognised... I'm starting to get a bit desperate and I'm planning to tow my Rover to an official Land rover dealer... this might get an expensive repair.... :-(

With no specialist assistance locally I've bought ECU kits from ebay, for my own cars and helped others with similar problems. Latest one was a Toyota owner who had lost her only key (the car is now running again).

You need the main ECU, EWS and transponder(s) from a matching vehicle: engine size, fuel type & gearbox. Something like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MG-ZTT-MG...9VYm:rk:1:pf:0

The seller doesn’t specify auto or manual which I believe is important. All the other parts supplied are not needed but good to have as spares. Might be a cheaper option than the one you’re considering.

Well that is good news in that your willing to help the OP, but for clarification are you now providing this and other services as you have done in the past or is this just for this particular member?

As for my “bodges” I’m quite happy with the solution although I admit to some trepidation when I first fitted a ECU kit due to the advice given about mis-matches. But other factors such as this post are equally scary.

My car was fitted with an Ebay kit in 2013 along with a s/h BCU, some other non-original equipment in the form of a used LSM & IPK was added sometime later. Yet it still runs and is used daily.

I recall an offer you once made of sorting out my mis-matches if only I were closer. I’d love to have taken you up on your offer but sadly reality is what it is for many of us outside UK and we have to use the options available to us. But as said it would be nice to know which ones are “open”.
