Where to Buy New keys
I foolishly bought my 75 connie with only one key which I live in dread of losing. I have approach key cutting shops and I am told that the problem is locating the "block" used for the key body. it seems to be a non-standard size. I have been told to expect to pay £150 for a new key. Any Comments please

This is the standard procedure, as supplied by Lates one of our esteemed members.

The keys come from Germany, not cheap, then there is the time coding in etc. It's not quite the same as getting a set of house keys, the security is built in. I think you'll find any modern car will cost that and in some cases much more.

I bought my key through the RAC. They gave me a contact in Warrington. But it still involved sending scanned copies of the log book etc via email to him, plus paying £152 ish, then waiting 2-3 weeks for the key only to be told it needed "programming" to my cars security code and ecu! Fortunately my local garage did that for me free of charge.

Wow, how times have changed, If somebody told me 15 years ago that an ignition key would cost me £150 I would have laughed them out of the room, sign of the times I suppose

They got made complicated because of thieving scumbags, and then more complicated still. But you wouldn't be happy if just anyone could walk into halfords and buy a key for YOUR car! |

My VW had only one key for it. It was ex Motorbility and all documentd had been lost apart from the log book. Having just the one key prompted me to visit my nearest VW dealer. New key cost me under £60.00. At the same time a friend of mine had a Vauxhall key replaced, cost £150. This is just a rip off to the poor old customer! There is no justifiable reason at all for the inflated prices we have to cough up in this country.
