Default hard ride

hi my rover 75 contemporary se diesel auto on 17 inch alloys is a lovely car but the ride seems very hard to me compared to my previous rover 75 club diesel on 16 inch alloys. Can any one tell me if this is normal ? I would also like to fit x4 new tyres as the front ones are new but of a very cheap brand and the back ones are close to their legal limit. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best brand to fit as I am thinking this may improve the ride quality. I ve had the car fully checked over underneath and all is ok with no problems. Any advice greatly received. Thank you .

lower profile tyres = harder ride

Its down to the size of the rims rather than the tyres. The larger the diameter of the alloy the smaller the sidewall of the tyre to achieve the correct overall diameter, hence the firmer ride.

I am sure i remember reading that the later Rovers used the MG suspension setup, which would partially explain it. Smaller wheels (with attendant higher profile tyres) might help a bit.

Thank you for your replies. Does anyone suggest a particular brand of tyre for the 17 inch alloys. Would like to fit a good middle of the road tyre.

I dont know if they do a 17 inch tyre but have just fitted Dunlop Blue response tyres all round on 15 inch rims, all ok at he moment and a reasonable price

Default hard ride

the best ride you will get will be higher profile on 15" wheels, !6" wheels a bit harder ride and on 17" wheels you will need much lower profile and obviously a much harder, less forgiving ride. Remember that a lot of your suspension is in the sidewalls of your tyres.

What profile are your tyres, I have the same problem and have Meteors on a MK1 fitted with 225/45/17's I believe that on MK2's with these wheels Rover fitted 215/50/17 to give a slightly better ride. I am looking to try and improve ride by going this route, haven't decided which brand to go for yet, noise level is another item high on my list albeit thus far I have found the latter tyres seem to be a £20 -30 premium per tyre.

I have exacetly the same car with the same hard ride, my ZR goes over speed bumps better than my 75, it really is too hard around town. It's fine on the motorway, very precise and doesn't waller all over the road.
