Get under and spray everywhere ( except your brakes ) .

Best put down a sheet or something as you get a fair few drips ..and be prepared to get a bit mcky .. but really gets it in the crevices, as these pumps can be adjusted to quite a fine spray. 1 pint should cover the whole back end .

This sort of action every few years kept my little Fiat( italian for rust ) on the road for over 30 years and its still going strong .

Hi Chris

Sounds like a good method, and made me think that maybe a good sprayer to use would be the 'Garden Type' used for insecticides. They hold anything up to 8 Ltrs !

My method is to clean off any surface rust, treat with Jenolite (rust converter),paint with Hammerite, treat with Waxoyl, and then, ride around for a period so that road dust adheres to the Jenolite. If you then recoat it you end up with a lovely gooey coating which seems to be impervious to almost anything. Any areas which do seem to lose protection can be recoated annually with
a brush. I have rebuilt several MGs and a couple of Morris Minors and this method kept them rust free for as long as I kept the cars (up to eighteen
years). If you spray into box sections or sills you MUST ensure that the drain holes are not blocked afterwards as that is death to enclosed areas.
Thanks wuzerk

Good method to use. Very thorough, thankyou

Do you know if the 5 ltr size of 'Waxoyl' come with any type of spray attachment ?

This has started me thinking

Access under the car is a problem for most, and I started to think about any garages who might let out their ramps, pits etc, so that DIY'ers could be better able to do jobs like these themselves. Or any other servicing, work etc.

I've put a thread up in the General Forum, to see what happens

Are you really going to need that amount of Waxoyl (or are you going to be doing the whole under-body and arches too)?!

I got 2 large spray cans of Waxoyl Black from Halfrauds and hardly made a dent in one of them covering the rear subframe parts on my BMW E38 etc...

It goes a long way!

Bilt Hamber products are I think far superior now than Waxoyl. Well their main market is I believe oil platforms and industrial applications.

Thanks every one, so far all suggestions

The route I have decided to take, is to source new/ replacement parts, get them all treated and rustproofed ( even the new parts ), and then swopped over.
It seems logical to me to attack one part of the car at a time, so I'm starting on Rear Suspension. If I can source new at reasonable prices I will, if not good 'Secondhand'.

So the search begins: I have already purchased 'NEW' Rear Upper Suspension Arms (scarce), courtesy Mat at DMGRS, and also have obtained a good condition Rear Subframe. So I have made a start.

I will buy good secondhand if I can, rather than buy 'New', 'cause like most, because my funds are 'limited', and I still have to consider the cost of parts change over ( Garage Cost ).

When I've done the rear end, then I will move to other areas, but in my case rear end most important.

This is going to be no 5 minute job, due to cost/part availability, but I want to keep my Beautiful Rover on the road for many years to come.

Thanks again for all the advice and suggestions

Waxoyl do sell a simple spray attachment but I would not bother with it as I found it never works properly after the first time despite careful cleaning.
They also do a better system with a circular tin with a pump but that had design issues too for me.The secret is that the Waxoyl ,not the black type, must be as fluid as possible hence standing the tin in hot water. I ended up using a brush. Everyone has their own preferences but the fact that Waxoyl prevented any rust issues on a Morris Minor in daily use for ten years and an MGB for eighteen is good enough for me.

Mine isn't too clever especially around the back end - the subframe is quite corroded on the surface. It still feels solid though.

A good call on ordering a set of rear upper arms Alf - for other members wondering, there's a pair of arms at the back which form part of the rear suspension. They're mild steel, so corrode quite badly - but I'm having a load made up for future use. You can order here:
Rear Upper Arms Group Buy - 75/ZT

Default Rust Prevention (Again)

I had the underbody of the V6 professionally sealed last year with Waxoyl for £58. A discounted price. The car recently passed its MOT with no advisories. The car was 16 years old on 02 October

My wife's zt one of the rear wishbones broke at the anti roll bar mount a few weeks ago.
I fitted a not so good 2nd hand to keep me mobile whilst I have gathered up the parts.
I've picked up 2 almost new rear subframes and a pair of rear wishbones with a 2nd pair due this week.
All parts will be derusted using electrolysis and painted with red oxide primer before a coat of hammerite black and wax injected prior to fitting.
I'll also be derusting and treating any rust up and in that area when the car is stripped.

I've a few other jobs to do as well prior to MOT on Tuesday so fingers crossed the weather stays dry.

WOW £58 Now that's what I call brilliant. I've asked a couple of places local to me and they want to put a NOUGHT on the end of that

Downside for me is 'South Africa' seems a bit of a trip
