Default Should I worry??

I have noticed a low clunky sound when I turn the wheel at very low speed.
There is nothing to be noticed when the car is suspended and I twist the wheels. No noticeable slack or the like and I can't reproduce the sound this way.

Since it is a new occurrence I fear a large invoice coming up

Any suggestions for the reason and possible remedy.

Preben

strut top bearing, mine did this, almost a "twang" when turning left to right.
Cheap to buy but a pain to change

Put a flat palm on top of the strut --get someone to turn steering back and forth with engine running --what can you feel ?

If the top bearing is seized, when you turn the steering you are forcing the spring to rotate against the stationary( seized bearing) surface ,
so the spring will wind up a bit until the friction force is too great then the spring will " twang" back.

with no load on the wheels ( i.e up in the air ) the force is much less so most likely won't "twang"

The bearing under 20 quids a side but the strut has to come out..

It does sound like strut top bearings - these:
Strut Top Bearings
Mine does the same, the job is 'on the list' so to speak.

Default Problem solved

I bought the strut bearings from DMGRS (usual fast delivery).

However, when I had them fitted yesterday, they discovered that the problem was NOT the bearings, but a leak in the power steering system. The fluid had almost disappeared. But it seems the pump is still ok

I had the bearings changed anyway, so I have one less thing to worry about in the future.
Also the front suspension bush and holder was changed. The bush was almost rotten.

Now all I need is a magic wand to make the Traction control warning go away

I'm glad to see you've found the cause of the problems - a shame it wasn't the bearings, but as you say they're done now.
