VIN Number
Hi All,
The last few characters of my vin are M132463 and the car was registered on the 23/12/1999 does this mean my car on a V plate was the 132,463rd car off that production line? Thats a lot of cars in the first year is that correct? Simon

The numbers start at 100001 so it's the 32,463rd off the line
Remember though the numbers are not only for this country but the overseas markets also. Production slowed later to meet demand eg. by early June 2001 the production figures were 217000. Russ

But doesn't that mean it's 32 thousand odd as post production cars are 10..... Etc. That makes more sense to me. I may be wrong

Thanks for the clarification,
That is some production still, I have been delving in old posts and Stocktakes car is 100886 and registered June 1999 so mine only 6months later was the 32,463 off the line. I didnt realise so many were made. Thanks Simon

Yeah, like weeds they were. Mine´s M001149. Still have difficulty accepting that they made over a thousand pre-production cars

Could be. Problem is that the build dates (date rolled off the line) are missing. Registration date doesn´t mean much, only that it was built -sometime- before then. Stickers with dates on the reverse of interior parts only suggest when they were made at the subcontractors not when they were incorperated into the car. Even then that doesn´t necessarily mean that the car rolled off the line the same day.
Wish someone could have a go at our chinese friends and get the logs from the production lines I know that my Stag, for instance, rolled off the line just before the Xmas break in 1976 (as a 1977 model). The records have survived... Last edited by Roverowner; 10th March 2011 at 17:00.. |
