Good evening Gents !

I know you are all well versed in PCV filters by now but I thought I would share my story with you all, I have been for some time worried about the state of my PCV filter and today without a replacment decided to open her up and have a look, now my vehicle is on 98000 miles, drives perfect, no smoke from exhaust at all,MPG is always pretty high, I do long journeys and not much stop starting and lastly my engine oil is always changed at 6000 miles, now I stripped the vehicle down to gain access and found the fuel return pipes very sticky so managed to wiggle the pcv casing past the pipes without removing, when i turned it over for a look I was totally horrified at what i saw, the filter had obviously never been changed and was totally saturated with black gunky oil, now I didnt have a replacment but I was so horrified I rebuilt without the filter as no way was I putting that back in again ! the vehicle actually runs smoother and im getting I reckon at the moment another 6-8mpg so I know you have all heard about checking your PCV filter but for those like me who said will do that tomorrow and keep putting it off for the sake of your engine please dont !

The same engine, similar mileage - I did mine just this week and it was clean enough that I needn't have worried about it for a long time yet. Can't really see it as having been checked before, because it has been dealer serviced to the point where I got my hands on it and I don't think the PCV is scheduled to be ever checked.

i would get a filter asap , as this could destroy your turbo .... why didnt you wash it out ? and refit.

The latest PCV unit for the Rovers has eliminated the actual filter element
which is the item which can,and does, clog up and cause oil leaks. The part number is:B11.12.7.799.224 and is available from BMW dealers.

It was too badly contaminated or else I would have done, shall get a new filter asap !

How Much For Replacement Filter? I Know You Change It For The Filterless Bmw Unit Which Is Around £45

The filter itself a member on here called Jules sells for im sure £16 but I shall probably be going down the filterless route with mine.

well the new filterless one from BMW has a longer service life although apparantely they do still require changed after a certain mileage, its a tough call because some people swear by the new filter and others tend to disagree that there are any benefits to it. Even if the filter element is bought seperately (to keep original style filter) the actual casing has a supposed renewal time too
