****K&N Air Filter would void my car insurance****
I phoned my car insurer today to inform them about my 160 remap, no problem just an extra £32.00.
When I said I also wanted to fit an K&N Air Filter, they said they would not insure me, as it was not an OEM part!!!

Unfortunately there's just one small problem with that, not only did he already mention it to them (so he's aware of the facts about it). Most insurance terms will state that you need to notify the insurer of any modification to the vehicle. I'm sure it's been discussed before as to quite how they expect the majority of drivers of secondhand vehicles to be able to know what's a modification and what's not. If a K&N air filter is a modification (in the standard airbox) then surely a different fuel or oil filter to a branded Rover or OEM part would be as well? Of course the insurer may well say - 'Oh yes an Acme oil filter? no problem' - But what happens if you don't tell them but they find out during the course of a claim? The answer usually is this - if the modification had no bearing on the cause of the accident they can't use it as an excuse to refuse indemnity. Which leads to this: In the case of 'performance' modifications just make sure that speed in excess of what the standard vehicle would have been capable of in the same situation is not a factor. So keep Schtum on simple things like K&N filters and iridium spark plugs or whatever and just drive sensibly and safely and enjoy your car. Just remember that should you have cause to claim for repairs/damage from your own insurer that the extra cost of modified parts will be laughed at if you didn't declare them up front. So do declare those snazzy aftermarket alloys and 6000watt stereo system if you want the insurance to pay out on them when it gets nicked. .
