No.

... can I have tips for this job.
It's extremely difficult to fit a brand new cap due to its rigidity and the lack of space to apply tooling. When I renewed my timing belts last year I re-used one of my original camshaft caps. It was easier to fit and has been absolutely fine. If yours is missing then it must have been removed and not refitted properly.

As Simon has said there is no need to remove any belt. If your cap has blown off and you have found it then clean it up as best you can and replace. I used a crowbar and piece of wood but also some locktite. Otherwise Rimmers have new ones.

Unfortunately if you don't clean out the breathers / filters it is likely to happen again and perhaps if the front cap goes it'll contaminate the belt assembly.

Regards

Hello Boriss,

Thanks for the photo and yes, that is the cap covering the end of an exhaust camshaft. It's fitted from the outside of the camshaft carrier (the casting in which the camshafts are mounted, not the same as a rocker cover on a pushrod engine). You don't have to remove any engine parts or the timing belt cover.

Having said that, although it looks an easy job, it isn't! The cap must be pressed firmly and evenly into place. It has a ribbed outside surface which aids sealing but makes fitting difficult. There is so little room to position tooling in the right place.

Glad I read this. It looks like what happened to my V6 at the weekend and I didn't fancy paying for a full belt strip.

The old Rover dealer here got so fed up of these cam caps blowing they devised a holding bracket for them, pity they didn't paint them though!

Take out? I thought it flew off due to the pressure.

Think I bought the original ones priced at £4.80, second choice would be the L (Landrover) and then the aftermarket.

Just make sure they are truly central before pressing them in. As I mentioned I used Loctite, not just for security but a bit of lubrication while fitting. And then get the filters / breathers seen to.

Regards
