My Dad used to hold the punch and say "When I nod my head, hit it ............................... and don't take that literally!" After he hit the floor, I used to say "What does literally mean?"

The short time between positioning and punching is when things go off-centre, especially with hit-it. You're thinking about the hammer and not the point. Your eye is on the top end. I keep my autopunch tip very sharp and pointy so you can clearly see where you're putting it onto the surface. I press it slightly and sharp point actually keys itself into the metal to help stay on target. I also use two hands, one for holding on target and the other for pressing the activator. But my eye is always on the point

From my toolmaking apprenticeship I was taught to scribe two lines at the place the hole had to go. Where the two lines cross each other you get four sharp corners. The tip of the punch is very easy to locate where the lines cross and it will stay there. No slipping and I had to get things in the correct position to a thousandth of an inch or better on aircraft components.
Both types of punch will locate accurately.

Pushing or keying is NOT necessary.---

If you don't believe me I'll show you my T shirt Mr T-Cut.
