I fixed mine as per pictures, drilled small hole to prevent the fitting cracking, used a 2" wood screw, with 1.5" protruding, wrapped screw in insulating tape to avoid damage to headlining/roof. Been fixed for almost a year...

I did a similar fix to mine with screws (covered in tape to stop scratching). Haven't seen it dangling in my rear view mirror since...
