Yes ,the insulation test has to be done unless in that case one end is the earth.

The DC resistance of the solenoids is posted regularly Pete, and I seem to recall that it's in kilohms, so if you use a megohm range the readings will be smaller by three decimal places.

If the coil is broken it will be open circuit and the reading will be infinite. All you need for that is a standard multimeter costing £5 from e-bay.

Unless the insulation had broken down to earth, but a thorough test should still show this. Core to core, core to earth (and depends on how many cores and how many tests your willing to do). Hmm 64 star quad cable, that's me for 2 days

The DC resistance is 14 to 18 ohms.
Or 0.000014 to 0.000018 Mohms.

I might have a go at the solenoid that came out of my gearbox and if it's repairable I'll have a spare

Just a quick update on this one. Unfortunately, my repair didn't last long (not covered 500 miles since) and I've just had to replace the repaired solenoid due to the same fault reoccuring. Bought the new unit from JPAT near Bristol - excellent service & price, thanks guys.

With the benefit of hindsight, I'd say it's probably a safer bet to replace with new, rather than spend time & effort on removing and repairing the old solenoid. However, it was a Sunday and at least I now know what goes on inside !!

The new one was £43 inc VAT, so not worth all the bother of having to strip it all down a second time, JPAT keep them in stock - apparently it's a very popular part...
