can this be removed with the starter in situ and the gearbox in park,or does starter need removed and ring gear held in place with the screwdriver?

Best removed with a pulley holder... but starter off then the ring wedged has been done, with the risk of burring a tooth or two...

I would still use a pulley holding tool...
The auto has a starter ring same as the manual so you can use it

An air tool will pop the pulley off in no time.
We also have the proper locking tools but not had to use them yet for the loosening process !

Never never ever lock the opposite end of the crank !
They were never designed to have the twisting forces needed to loosen the pulley bolt. I've seen a few rough running diesels where MAFS, injectors pulleys, ECU's sensors changed to no avail to get them to run smooth again. That I put down to twisted cranks. We are only talking a few microns of twist/distortion which will make an engine rough
