Hi,
would a failing ABS unit on the front wheels activate the brakes without depressing the brake pedal?

Nope. If the car is pulling back then probably a seized caliper.

To my knowledge no,a failing abs sensor would put the light on the dashboard up and you would only have standard brakes not abs brakes. You have to apply the brakes to make them operate

I checked the brakes when it first happened, but I'll give the calipers another look.
