I cannot speak for the 1.8T, but the huge M18 bolt that holds the diesel crank pulley on is tightened in three torque angle stages.
This means that its a stretch bolt, and if loctite was used on it, you would probably never, ever get it out again, due to the huge amount of torque needed to shift it. I would guestimate it took about close to 650Nm to get mine undone without threadlock. If the re-fit instructions for the 1.8T bolt are in angled stages, then no, I would never, ever fit it with threadlock. |

i had my bottom pulley changed and the bolt was so tight it sheared off the 1/2 square drive of a quality adapter.

Lol 1/2" drive!!!
Doesnt even come close! Torque on this level needs a 3/4" at the absolute minimum, preferably a 1" to stop any flex in the breaker bar, if thats what you are using. Ive actually got a modified OEM crank pulley holding tool, as the torque is so much that you risk shearing teeth off the ring gear should anything slip. The morons at MG changed the spec of the bolt and washer, which meant the official BMW tool no longer fitted correctly. The "new" bolt had a taper and the washer was about twice as thick, meaning the tool wouldnt actually fit unless the centre was machined out to take the extra size of the new bolt/washer. |
