Default LED Illuminated Sun Visors

I got a pair of illuminated sun visors from the classifieds and after fitting them thought the lights were a bit dim, and didn't really give the light i'd expected they would.
So after persuading the other half that tinkering with the car again would this time be beneficial to her so she can pop her spots and do her lippy in nice bright light I was off and stripping them off the car.

So basically I thought i'd open em up and see what the crack is, thinking i'd be able to just get some new bulbs that were brighter. The bulbs are a long slim 1.6w bulb and i'd not seen anything like them before, but I did have a load of different coloured pre-wired LEDs. As it was late and I had already got excited and stripped them down I decided to solder some LEDs in to see what they looked like rather than trying to find some new bulbs in a shop. Besides, it was late and I was bored.

The mirror unit and housing is simply all held together with flanged plastic clips, so with a flat screwdriver just tease it away from the clips working your way around. The clips aren't huge so be careful not to be too heavy handed or you may break some.

...and the underneath part. The wiring is fed through here so access is tight, especially if you have fat sausage fingers like me.

The mirror just clips off of the main housing too:

Soldered new wires in

and a close up:

And then you get this

I didn't intend doing them blue but i've not received the white ones I bought yet, and curiosity got the better of me. Once the white ones come i'll be redoing mine, though you can just use whichever colour you like.

Looks good and well done with the soldering.A while back member on here Suzublu demonstrated some LED's he had fitted in his illuminated sun visors like for like swap if i remember..but a slightly tight fitting.

I know what you mean about the delicate retainers, very easily broken.

These things only cost £2 for 5 so really cheap. Takes about 10-15 minutes. I did think about the red ones but there's already too much red inside my car. Lol

The OP's post has been copied to here as it is a worthy addition.

Alan, if you redo or add/amend to this How to, please let me know so that I can update the How to Section

This is a good case in point of how the members of the Club help others by supplying such information.....

If you shop around on ebay, you can get them much cheaper than that. I recently bought 100 for £2 plus postage from HK. Not the ready for 12v versions, but the ones requiring a series resistor.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.
