Default Two speed fan

I've just put my toaf on my 180 to check the fan after fitting a new resistor and all I can get is the third speed( emergency)what should I be looking for next apart from another fan.

Hi Gordon.
There is no third speed on a fan fitted with a gold resistor or silver resistor.

The silver resistor & gold resistors are for two wire 2 speed fans only, there for if you have fitted a resistor to a four wire 3 speed fan it will not work.

Hi Gordon,

In your earlier thread you referred to a 2 speed fan (3 speed fans don't use a resistor as Arctic says) so I'm helping you on that basis.

You don't need Toaf to check that a replacement resistor is working. Simply start the engine and press the windscreen demist button. If the fan doesn't run continuously then check your connections to the resistor. Note that the slow speed on a 2 speed resistor system is very loud and is often mistaken for high speed.

So please can you press the demist button and tell us what happens.

Simon

Used Toaf today to check a 3 speed fan and a 2 speed fan (no resistor) but both fans worked on all the computer 3 selected speeds including the 2 speed fan. Shouldn't but it does.

Suggests to me that something is still wrong with your fan.

Regards

Hi Mike.
I presume you a referring to the 3 speed fan which as four wires going to the motor, & the 2 speed fan having 3 wires going to the motor, the later being a 2 speed fan?

1

From a 1.8?
2

Hopefully not confusing the thread

Yes Steve, one original 3 speed with four wires and a 2 speed (ex-1.8) three wire fan.

Just found it odd that Toaf activated all speeds when in fact it's only a 2 speed fan with the 2 relays in the 1.8 marked control box. Couldn't really hear any speed difference as the fan motor was loose on the garage floor and just plugged in for testing. Toaf has a slider function so you can limit the power otherwise I'd have had to nail the fan to a piece of wood.

Regards

Mike
