Default Chrome exhaust "tips"

Any tips on how to remove heavy deposits of soot etc from the chrome exhaust and restore the shine?

Many thanks in advance

Have you tried Brasso (Duraglit)? Another option if the exhaust is stainless steel as opposed to chrome-plating is stainless-steel cookware cleaner (yes, honest) but this only works if the exhaust is proper polished stainless steel. I think the chemical agents may do more harm than good if it is chrome.

Thanks Simon - I'm not sure if it's chrome to be honest, the bits that do shine look like chrome - but what do I know

You could try sticking a magnet to it. If it sticks you know for sure that it is not stainless steel. Other than that you could stare really really hard and try to make and educated guess...?!

I'm good at guessing ... the magnet may be better though!

best thing i find is autosol applied with very fine wire wool and some elbow grease, then follow it up with meguiars nxt metal polish (available from halfords). the autosol will remove the cack but can dull the finish of chrome. following with the nxt applied by microfibre will bring out the shine. results below of an audi S3 i did, using the above method.

The main thing is really to keep on top of the task so that the cleaning of it does not become a problem.

I'm with you there - this is not for my 75, but for another car which came to me with these rather heavy deposits. But yes, if you don't let it build up - then there is lass hassle to remove it!

Cheers

I use "Car Plan" tar remover on my chrome exhaust pipes, just smear on the tar remover and leave for a minute or two and then wipe off.
The black spots will just come off, far better than rubbing with chrome cleaner.
