The Complete History of the UK
My dad was a historian. Rather than read his entire book collection, I
thought I would watch UK TV History this morning, and bring my history up to scratch that way. I can summarise the entire UK history as follows; The UK was founded in 1942 by Winston Churchill. Before 1942 Britain was (presumeably) a wasteland devoid of people. Since 1942 Britain has been in a continuous state of war with Germany. Britain has no industrial, cultural, or social history to speak of... apart from conflict. Every morning the British people wake up, march down the street with rifles, and greet Winston Churchill. In the afternoon the men fly air combat sorties, the women make weapons. In the evening, the family gather around the anti aircraft guns, and try to shoot down German bombers (rather like the modern day PlayStation 3). No one in Britain has a colour camera; all films are black and white. |

Oh yes, and don't forget the witches ducking stool, the right of the local landowner to 'take' your daughter at will and of course bring back the man with the red flag in front of every car
Ah the good old days......................................

The history in schools however is different as we have to apologise for anything our ancestors did that is now deemed wrongful but anything thats good is down to us being a multi cultural society and is to be praised.
That aint the history my wife used to teach or indeed myself! Contextualisation is all; you can teach something is considered wrong today but wasn't deemed to be so back then because of attitudes, religious beliefs, politics etc. Anyway, history on the whole is a story of brutality, power and yes achievements...but we do tend to only remember the winners! Equally, a lot that is deemed good is a product of our imperial past . It isn't the schools that come up with the 'right on' politically correct attitudes prevalent in society - most teachers end up rather right-wing even if they started as lefties - it is the local councils and their so-called 'inclusion officers' and such-like. Anyway, I already have the ebay id for wytchefindergeneral....he is all mine, MINE I tell you! |
