Default Oily deposit in tourer boot - any ideas as to origin???

I just found a sticky oily deposit in the boot of my cdt tourer.

It was so sticky in places that it had stuck the spare wheel down.
In other places it was more runny, suggesting that the sticky stuff was an evaporated form of the runny stuff.

There was about half a litre in total.

It wasn't there about two months ago when I put hte spare in.
The only work done the on car since then has been replacing the bumper and 'o' rings.

Any ideas at what the source might be...

Have you carried a container of oil in the spare wheel well? If this has leaked it can soften the anti vibration material that's in there and make a sticky mess.

Nope - nothing in the wheel well but the spare and a few emergency tools.

Any other ideas folks...

Have you identified what it is by smell ? eg : oil / diesel /WD40 ?
Bear in mind that what has leaked didn't have to be stored in the wheel well as leaky containers stored in the side cubby holes will end draining to the wheel well too. Boot floor support strut will have a very small amount of oil but not the amount you're talking about .. does it work ?

In my saloons boot the spare wheel was laid on some kind of tar type matting about a foot square. At some time this must have got soft and had bonded the spare to the well so much that I had to prise it loose and then chip off all the stuck on pieces of this mat both in the wheel well and on the wheel.
I dont think it could have got so hot that it could end up like your problem but it`s a thought.
