Default 2002 Diesel Tourer - air pump won't turn off

I'm an under-the-bonnet ignoramouse, so please allow for this.

I have been driving my Tourer Club SE for 12 years and have had very few problems.

Yesterday, I jumped into my car only to find that the battery was completely flat - not a hint of power coming from it.

In normal circumstances, when I turn off the ignition, some kind of air pump cooling motor continues to run for about 10 mins, then automatically turns itself off.

Since yesterday, this motor refuses to turn itself off - this is what caused the flat battery as I didn't notice that the thing was still running.

I have since disconnected this pump and had the battery charged, and now the problem has disappeared.

I'm wondering how crucial the air pump is as the car seems to run fine without it.

The flat battery has also caused (i think) my climate control settings to show an error (Er) instead of showing a temperature. Is there an easy way to reset this?

Sorry if I haven't given enough detail. Please reprimand me accordingly.

Regards to all

It could be your FBH - it's a small unit in front of your battery, and when the PCB (circuit board) has issues, they can run on or cause other problems.

If it's this, you're OK to leave it unplugged.

The FBH (air pump thingy ) is controlled by the outside temperature sensor, it is fitted behind the lower grill. If the FBH thinks that the temperature is below 5 degrees it will attempt to start.

It will, but it shouldn't run on indefinitely - after a couple of minutes at most it should shut down unless the engine is on or it's commanded by a timer.
Sounds like (if it is the FBH) it's goosed.

We don't know, but disconnecting the fan is a bit of a faff - much easier to unplug the FBH.

Thanks for all the replies/suggestions guys

I've left the air pump disconnected and the car is running fine - presumably there's a thermostat somewhere that switches the pump off. Maybe that (if it exists) would be easy to replace????

Any ideas re my 2nd question regarding the climate control error? Couple more clues - the rear window heating switch is not working, the switch for internal circulation is also not working. Lastly, the indicator lights no longer flash when I lock the car.

Any ideas?

Have you removed both the plugs as shown in post no 2?

one two wire, one six wire.

This is assuming you have a FBH of course.

The faulty PCB in the FBH itself can be the cause of some, and more, of the errors you are telling us of, as it is linked to the car wiring loom K-BUS circuit , that a lot of other components share.

You can also remove fuse 8 from the underbonnet fuse box too, which is for the FBH also.

Snagger.

A flat battery can upset some of the items in the ECU. Try a battery reset.

Disconnect the negative terminal for about half an hour or so. This will often reset all the items you are having problems with.

Hi - are there any adverse effects if I do a battery reset?

Regards
