Thread revival, had another thought about this.

Sometimes when the front wheels had gone over a speed bump, I have heard an 'air noise' - like a hiss of air.

Could this be air that has got in being expelled from the dampers as they get a good workout from the speedbump? Or something else?

Also, can anybody tell me how far the damper rod should extend with the item off the car (for an OE Delphi unit, RND105340 or RND105350, V6 saloon)?

Any help appreciated

The bounce test doesn't really work. My shocks were totally empty but it didn't spring up and down, just rebounded and settled like it should. The only way to know is the disconnect at one end and compress it, if it goes in slowly and slowly returns out without any gurgling noise it's ok. If it collapses right in with no effort it's empty.

Shocks aren't tested in the MOT either, except for leakage.

They are part of the MOT in northern Ireland, the have a fancy shaker table to test them. Had my daughters car fail for a shock 2 years ago, no sign of leakage on it and bounce test looked fine but on the machines display it was clearly not performing correctly.

The air noise may just be air being expelled from the shock damper gaiter..
If the gaiter is in good condition it is basically a set of bellows..

Thanks - but to compare to how they should be, I would need to compare to a good shock, so I'd need a good one on hand.

Plus, I like to know if the dampers are good or before before starting the job (spring replacement) so I don't have to do everything twice - looking difficult to be certain

Do the front dampers have a return spring INSIDE them ??? ( Re- Your test. )

Yes it does work, because modern shocks have gas in them as well as oil. Try it for yourself, take a new shock and lean on it and it slowly compresses all the way in then it slowly pushes itself back out.

Then try it with one that's done 100,000+ miles, often it will be juddery or will move freely for a bit then resist. My shocks at 180k just collapsed straight in and stayed there, no gas or oil left in them, and it passed the MOT a month before.

i had brand new shocks from rimmers last year and needed to pull them out to full length to get the top mount on with the spring comperessed... no internal return at all on iether side...
