I bought a Tourer with some fitted, and one was knocking like billy-O after 14 months in service. Add to that, there was an issue with the XPart Genuine MG Rover front drop links last year - well documented on here by several specialists (I'll leave them to come forward if they want to) that the boot was too large, allowing water in. Picture below - not mine, but from the specialist involved: The market for these is very large, full of options and everyone has their own favourite. I stock what I do because I believe they're the best option at the moment - no other reason. Just my 2p, no doubt I'll be pounced on for 'touting' or whatever by the regulars

One particular member had a complete meltdown when I suggested a drop link they'd recommended wasn't great, but I've had issues with that member previously so it wasn't a huge surprise... despite me backing up my claim with several customer-provided experiences of the item. Would they listen? Would they heck... I'm sure those concerned know who they are - but rest assured, you're not one of them. I know that my input is appreciated by most - and for that I'm grateful. More to the point - if I thought a part was top-notch, you can guarantee I'd have a pallet of them on the way within the hour. I was a member and enthusiast long before I had the business - so I'm focused on quality, not what's cheap to buy or easy to get hold of.

Whatever drop links you fit, they aren't going to change the suspension characteristics (apart from noisiness!) What Tracker said is right - fit uprated (harder, and shorter) ZT springs. ZT owners may know if the ZT arbs are stiffer. Expect the ride over rough surfaces to be harsher.

My honest opinion is that no drop links last as long as they should, but that's more to do with all the potholes!
And over-sized boots are a common issue..... They're normally ok until they're fitted |

The main problem I have found is the lack of grease .

Same with me - we tested about 15 different brands of link before settling on the ones we have, and this was a shockingly common theme!

I for one have never been convinced about the grease theory. The ball should be a tight fit in a nylon type material that lines the outer shell. I think the problem lies in two areas - nylon materials used not being for for purpose and the general condition of our roads reducing lifespans.
The only purpose that grease can serve in a balljoint is to keep moisture out but this can be achieved with a minimal coating of grease and a fit for purpose rubber balljoint cover. Matt - it would take the equivalent of say 25k+ (preferably 50k+) miles to test a droplink. Doing so on a dozen or so different makes would be a huge undertaking. Do you have some sort of a test rig to simulate all-weather driving conditions over those miles? |
