Could be - it was while idling at traffic lights.

Engine management systems are quite sensitive, if a sensor drops out of range it can put the light on. Generally it takes a few failure cycles before the light illuminates constantly. Keep an eye on it and see if it happens again before worrying too much about it

Oh yes

I'll watch it like a hawk.

Does it mean an immediate stop though?

There was no discernible difference in the way the engine was running when it appeared today.

I've noticed that on my KV6 it is actually very difficult to stall the engine - even having the revs drop to zero, the warning lights flash up, silence for a brief moment and then it kicks back into life. I have heard rumours that diesel engines are more difficult to stall but then this is only hearsay amongst some friends of mine so don't know if it actually holds water or not

The check engine has to light when anything emission related is at fault. The hand book usually says something along the lines of 'stop immediately' or take to deallership as soon as possible. Some times the light is on and the car runs fine. It's very rare that you have to stop imediately due to a light, if the problems that bad the fault would cause the car to stop

Just occasionally i'll get it on start up for a few seconds until plugs are hot if the car has been stood up a week or so..... especially if it has been very wet and damp.

However, if the light comes on at normal temperature I would suggest checking the plugs for wear, and HT leads and coil pack connections as a first port of call to eliminate any source of a possible misfire

But Raistlin's car's a diesel.
I had the light come on a few times a few months ago for no apparent reason. I ran the OBD before taking it in for a check with a T4 (I was obssessing about engine temperature at the time). I was told that there had been a fuelling fault at some stage, but they couldn't tell what, because I had run the OBD. It's never happened since. Suggest a T4 check.
