Arctic, bumper off again then I expect. The other issue with the electrics are rev counter, temp gauge & HRW don't work either, splash guard/bulb access panel missing upon purchase & the wiring was all the same colour (road brown.)Do you know if there is a link between temp gauge/fan/aircon?

Sure is All the above are linked to corroded/broken joints in the wiring harness. Usually this is found if the access panels are missing, inviting the elements to attack the wiring. usually passengerside .
bigruss has seen quite a few with this problem now, almost always damage to the harness. not a difficult repair but could be time consuming, you just need to get in there and have a look

Hi Ade,

I'm confused. You've said this:

How can your air conditioning be "toasty warm/hot" and "ice cold" at the same time? Please can you explain?

You also say this:

...but they bypassed the air con relay to get it to fire up ...
If it was "ice cold" then the compressor must be running, so what's all this about by-passing the compressor relay "to get it to fire up"? Are you saying that the air con. won't run unless the compressor relay is by-passed? If so, is it then warm or ice cold?

Simon.

Ah I see what you mean. The aircon won't operate from the aircon panel in the car and as a result inside the car it's toasty. When it was regassed, the system runs, gets cold etc... so on its own it works fine. The garage bypassed the relay to run the aircon up, they didn't bypass the compressor.

The only air con. relay in the car's fuseboxes is the compressor relay. Your garage must be referring to that.

Your problem seems to be that the air con. ECU is not responding to a request to turn it on. Are you sure that the refrigerant charge is correct? Too little or too much will stop the compressor running, but by-passing the relay will override this safety device.

I am aware of the link between the temp/HRW/revs by 1 wire, but wasn't sure if they were linked to the air-con. As an aside, the IPK diagnostic codes showing water temperature & engine revs do not display if their analogue counterparts don't work.
By the way, thank you for your feedback & assistance.

I'll ask. Cheers for the pointer.

Fellas, thanks for all your valuable hints & tips. A quick update, I asked the chap at work who replaced the fan brushes what he did to get the fan to run up & he checked the motor, but not via the control box. We have since checked the the fan on the car via the control box &....... nothing. So control box relay/pcb fault. As an aside I went to the scrappy to get a spare, it didnt work when plugged into my car, now there is a good chance it's duff anyway, but it didn't help me diagnose my fault any further. I should've been a bit more patient, now front end off again, control box will be relocated this time.

When I had a fan 3 speed failure it was my intention to replace the brushes in the motor and away we should have gone, however, it is my opinion that any 3 speeder that fails also wears away the commutator too badly and the only answer is a new fan assembly, this is from experience.
