Rust
Hi All,
I have a 99 75 CDT and on looking underneath i notice it is very rusty (not rotten) to chassis and subframes etc. I appreciate the cars age but from outside she still looks like new, is this common or have i got the only one? Does anyone reccomend what to do or anybody that can treat it for me as i would like to keep the car in tip top condition for many years? Cheers, Deeks |

WOW !!! thanks for that, think that maybe a bit too much for me to consider but admire the guy for his work. Looks like a wire brush and coat of hammerite for me though

Rust
I have a small compressor and every now and again I spray subframes etc with clear waxoil. Powder coating looks great but, in my opinion, life's too short.
I used to live in Iceland and for winter protection people would take their car to a bay, get it sprayed with old engine oil (underside that is) then drive fast down a dusty road. |

I knew someone who used to paint the underside of his cars with the used engine oil when he did a service. Each to their own... And used oil is highly carcinogenic on the skin...
... and his cars still seemed to rust. I think it depends what is rusted. Floors and sills etc are a no no, but heavy suspension items etc are different. Of course it's very nice to see things gleaming if you have the time. Last edited by lovema75; 8th June 2012 at 11:03.. |

waxoyl
Give it a good wire brushing and apply copious black waxoyl; much of the rust is just surface and aesthetic. Waxoyl will need a bit of attention every few years but its better than hammerite and does not need much in the way of prep. You can spray it on too. Its great stuff if a tad messy; do it somehere easy to clean and expect a fair bit on you. There is another thread on corrosion of suspension parts with some stuff too. (Obviously this will have to wait for the monsoon to end!!)

Waxoyl. Will creep in where paint can't get.
