Default Starter motor gone?

On battery alone the starter motor only clicks. Using jumper cables it howls in a strained way but engine does not turn. Any pointers?

I am going to try to tow-start later today just to ensure engine goes round and fires.

If you definitely know the starter is turning, then it could be the battery has not got enough charge to throw the starter gear on the end of the shaft to engage The flywheel. On the other hand, it may be the two copper contacts have worn out inside the starter. You can get these on the Internet quiet cheaply. Artic may be along to show you what to do shortly. If you join the club membership, you can access what to do about a non working starter motor. There are many examples of repairing them. Good luck.

Default Ouch!

Ok, I removed the cambelt cover and ran on the starter. The accessory belts rotate so the crankshaft does as well. The cam belt is nice and tight, but does not move So a damaged or missing woodruf key or similar is the most likely cause. And of course head and valves are toast

Hello Per,

I don't have a 1.8T but from the diagrams in the manual there doesn't appear to be a Woodruff key. The timing belt gear wheel seems to be located on the crankshaft by means of a groove and a projection.

I'm struggling to think of an explanation for how the ancillary belts pulley can rotate but not the timing belt gear.

Hopefully a 1.8 expert will be along to help.

Sounds like your timing belt has stripped some teeth off it which are now on the crank pulley at the bottom

I didn't notice any print on the top section I could see clearly so no idea. According to the PO it had a belt change about five years ago. I am beginning to doubt that.

Very few 75s sold here in Norway so no Turbo engines floating around. Pity really because the rest of the car is really good. Virtually no rust, pristine interior, lots of new parts for NO version of MOT.

I am rebuilding the engine for another car and have yet another rebuild waiting. I am not really up for a third one. Simple engine swap, yes, but not full rebuild. (I assume compression etc is different on the cooking non-turbo 1.8.)

Also not familiar with the 1.8 but believe the K4 heads to be common, and there is a guy in Sandnes (Einar) who is very familiar. Search for posts on here by poster beinet1, or attempt to contact him on this FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/153448372029381

Situation across the border in Sweden is the opposite, lots of 1.8Ts but I've never seen a non T model.
