Question Diesel cranking but not firing

Hi all,

History of events & initial testing:
- diesel running OK-ish (had a second delay in my initial starting)
- ran 5 miles & stopped the car
- wanted to start again but only cranking and no firing

- rev counter jumping a bit (not the crank sensor?)
- diesel in the tank (>30%)
- under bonnet fuel pump seems to be slushing around diesel (very easy to hear)
- in-tank fuel pump seems to be humming a bit (faintly, difficult to hear with rear bench removed)

Tried a battery booster, no joy
Charged the battery from 12.3V to 13.0V, no joy
OBC (19-9) shows 12.4V
Fuel filter was changed a few months back & used Redex

What else can I try?

To check if any fuel is reaching the injectors you need to try some easy-start spray.--If it runs for just a second or then stops it indicates there's no fuel at the injectors.--You can find on the forum a number of reasons for non starting. High and low pressure sensors, front and back fuel pumps -You will also find details of how to tackle each fault.
Lots of info but too much to list in this post.

Wish you luck in your search.---

I know a common non start on my engine (1.8) is caused by a dirty or corroded spade connector to the starter motor from the battery - a quick check and clean and see if that helps .

The OP states That the engine turns over but fails to start..So it seems the starter motor is OK

Possible cam sensor. Remove it and put it in the freezer for an hour, and refit. If it starts it’s the cam sensor. Good luck.

A good friend came to the rescue and helped with the diagnosis: the in-tank fuel pump has gone.

My faulty front offside ABS sensor played up the fuel gage so it was harder to initially diagnose.

Both will be repaired shortly

That is unusual, If the Tank is over a 1/4 full they will normally start with just the under bonnet pump working

Hi Mat.
How did your friend come to that conclusion, i also note you have 2005 car with an UBP not the usual face lift just in-tank pump then.

As above if the diesel is at the quarter level it can stop the car from starting, so always best to add some extra fuel.

The under bonnet pump may well seem it's working ok but did you disconnect it, put the end into a bottle and set the ignition to II and make sure the flow is steady not spluttering.

Did you try starting it with a wiff of engine start? if not try it, also do a leak back test.

You could always try and contact a certain guru in your area, which would solve any guessing games.
