Default What is this bootlid thingy?

Apologies for the vague thread title, but if it were any more specific I'd already have my answer!
So as per the picture below, what is this thing that is hanging from the lower end of my bootlid? It has a wire going into it but cannot work out what it's for, maybe alarm related? Car is a 2004 CDti if it makes any difference.

It's the emergency (remote) boot release. Only needed on the Mk2 as there is no unlocking with the key.

If all else fails, it's to open the boot manually. Drop the rear seats and crawl through, then pull the release.

Just pull it! Hinged at one end, free at the other; on the back (hidden part) it has a thick flexible plastic link 'wire' connected to the 5th door latch, it's just a mechanical release mechanism.

Well I just looked for my thingy and it seems to be missing the middle bit. Very disappointed.
