I'd suggest that you investigate further before reaching a decision. Fully expose the cambelt to check for stripped teeth. If necessary, release the tension and take off the belt. The cause of engine faults can be surprising and not what the initial diagnosis has led you to believe.

Just to be clear: The 1.8 is an interference engine, i.e. with cam belt gone or teeth stripped the valves fully open will get bent by pistons? So as a minimum top end rebuild?

Yes I believe so, at least the KV6 is. One sign of top end damage that I've experienced is that the engine turns over on the starter very fast (no resistance).

If you've viewed Einar's posts you'll see he's done a complete rebuild including head. He might even have a replacement cylinder head as I remember he bought several "scrap" engines (ex-Freelander).

Time to examine that cambelt.

ps I see you've found your way to the Norwegian group and been offered a cylinder head, hopefully Einar will see your post but he's not as active as he once was.
