Wrists are aching after pounding them in with a 4lb hammer.Yep, Millerhill at Edinburgh wasn't as big as some but still huge, biggest we used to work into was Kingmoor at Carlisle, it was vast. Back in those days it was 95% individual wagon loads that had to be made up into trains or trains arriving were split up to go to smaller local yards.

All that's left at Millerhill is a fraction of the up yard used by Scotrail for stabling units. DRS is based at Carlisle and they have a large loco depot at Kingmoor but very little of the yards are used.

I watched a YT vid of a vast marshaling yard being built in the 1950s (I think) around the Carlisle area with a gravity hill to send the wagons down to individual sidings to make up a train.

I got lost in the huge Speke sidings on a game last night You get a plan of where your train of wagons are to couple up to but there are scores of sidings with lots of points to change, I apparently don't know my right from my left & kept having to back up past the points I'd set wrong to reset them

I did it once too often & put the rear end of the tender through a red aspect light Game over after 30 minutes of trying

The "gravity hill" was known as a hump, hump shunting. The points were controlled from a tower with retarders that would slow the wagons en route to the siding. The shunters would split the train where required, the guys in the tower would preprogramme the points, a loco would slowly shove the train up the hump and they'd freewheel down into the siding. The down hump at Millerhill was still in use when I started, the PNB (physical needs break) point for the driver on the down hump pilot loco was a pub called The Alpha in Millerhill village

Hump shunting at Toton.

Hump shunting that's the word, The guy in the tower retarding the auto brakes can judge it perfectly as to how much to slow a wagon down to just reach it's destination.

Crewe to Blackpool this afternoon driving a Jubilee, turn table jobby to turn the train around & back onto the carriages in the station.

Good morning Jeff, morning all

Thank you for the birthday wishes, much appreciated.

A great photo Jeff of one of my all time dream cars, not sure about the colour as I more British Racing Green

No bunting here, as the royalist family are all away and 3 of my best friends in the club are anti-royalists - full of hate for the royals but hey ho! Each to their own, it’s a funny old world

Roll on summer

Everyone, what are your plans for the weekend?

ps. Jeff

The HBA1C blood test result for pre-diabetes and diabetes was normal, I do not have diabetes.
It was EMPAGLIFLOZIN tablet which had stripped out the glucose causing the hypo and not diabetes.
It shows how well these medications work and how important getting the BG stable is

Morning. Ging is dayshift again so up at 5, didn't bother going back to bed, can't get back into a meaningful sleep.

Only time I've been involved with a turntable was on the EMI Express, charter for EMI hauled by the Evening Star and Green Arrow. Up to Gleneagles, drop the passengers, on to Perth where we had to turn the locos on the old turntable at the goods yard. Any power assistance on the turntable had long since been removed and it was down to as many bodies as possible and brute force to shove it round.

Not doing anything Phil. Ging is dayshift today then nightshift tomorrow. Bit of gardening is on the cards.

Morning all, Looks like a sunny day on the cards here according to the forecast, Not much sign of it yet though.

Morning Phil, I'm not doing much this weekend apart from some gardening, Lots of houses around here with flags & bunting up so looks like lots of garden parties if the weather holds.

Morning Phil,

Good news on NOT joining my club

Couldn't find a BRG MG from the weekend....But still looking as I'm sure there was one in my images.

In the meanwhile, here's a red one for you

Morning Bob,

Cold and breezy here and looks like rain will follow shortly

I’m sitting outside the post office waiting for it to open.
Zed the Ted will be travelling first class on his way to Trikey’s

We are staying in a village called Banchory for an early birthday celebrations really warm here with not a cloud in the sky, could be in the upper twenties at the moment.
