It is the fact that it is so localised to the extreme edge of the tyre that gets me. Usually you might see the shoulder wearing away a little if it was toeing poorly, but it's as if something has dug into it over a width of 10mm or so and nowhere else.
Very strange.

Alignment checked, on a proper Hunter system... pretty much bang on. Nsf toe was adjusted a tiny bit but the tyre with the problem was fine and didn't need any adjustment.

It was suggested that the pressure might be too low, I usually inflate to 31psi but they're now at 36. Will monitor it for a bit but I would be surprised if it was just the pressure.

Hi Jim.
The psi at 36 is a bit to high set them at 32psi all round, they should be 32 front and 30 rear, but i like mine 32psi on each corner.

I know what they should be, and I usually set them to 31 all round. And I do check them regularly. I checked them just before it went for alignment and they were all spot on.

It was suggested by the tyre guys that I run a higher pressure. Having briefly researched tyre wear caused by low pressure Google throws up lots of images that are very similar to what happening to mine. So somehow 31ish psi is just too low for those tyres. Realistically a higher pressure won't have much ill effect. Doing that for a while and monitoring closely might be a good idea.

I had a odd tyre wear on my Rover P4 , on only one tyre and that was a faulty tyre, the case was distorted. I am surprised your tyre place would check the alignment with a worn tyre . The wear can push over the wheel and its suspension on its rubber mounts and give a false reading
