This is sort of why I think there's something of "cry wolf" (or, heaven forbid, revenue generation) going on.
The HGV's (and other motorists) who doubtless go up and down this road umpteen times a day, see that there's nothing happening, no works being done and no one there so just drive on as if there's nothing happening, no works being done and no one there and, therefore, conclude that there's no good reason for the reduction in speed limit. It might not be right, but I can see why it happens. And worse, if something does happen then the mindset is already "...this is just a sign, there's nothing actually happening..." Crunch. I wonder if there would be a different behaviour if the only time that there was a speed limit reduction was if there was actually something happening to "validate" it? And the limit was removed as soon as the incident was dealt with in real time. Last edited by AndyN01; 23rd February 2022 at 08:49.. |

I now have a picture of a stationary queue of traffic, on the A12, with Maninder blasting past down the middle, filtering at 65 mph, on his King and Queen seat. lol It would be ok, though. Not much chance of the police about and the "Safety" camera replacement would deem that it is fine too.

Exactly the same situation exists on the A14 at Claydon at the moment - night time road works and 50/40 MPH speed limit that very few people seem to abide by. This would be a great location for a couple of not so visible speed cameras for revenue collection and educational purposes.

Where I live (British Columbia) there are now very few speed cameras. The only ones are integrated with red light cameras at "problem" intersections.
At one time we had speed camera vans that would appear at random locations but they were done away with after an election promise. The things were hated as they were anonymous and were only revenue generators with no pretense of reducing traffic speed. They did slow traffic in their specific locations as people would slam on their brakes when they saw one. (Causing many accidents!) They were also expensive as each one had a police officer inside trying to stay awake. Now they rely on radar equipped police cars for enforcement as they can also attend to other road/police calls.

Clearly not that successful in stopping speeders if they've caught 700:

If they were "safety" cameras, would it not be better to use average speed cameras rather than those generally used? I feel that often, the sudden jamming on of the brakes for the spot cameras is probably more dangerous than the speed.
One of the few places where I feel that the term "safety" camera is used correctly is Dial Post on the A24, where fixed cameras are used to dissuade drivers from hammering past a junction, the site of many bad accidents. On the approach there are several warnings and the camera is highly visible, so whether or not it works is irrelevant, it does the job. Anyone getting caught there deserves it. |
