Which emissions? And what about using up finite resources?

Hydrocarbons? Carbon monoxide? Carbon Dioxide? NOX? Particulates? Sulphur compounds? Volatile Organic Compounds?

Building the thing in the first place?

Scrapping it at the end of its life?

All of the above?

Not that long ago diesels were the best thing since sliced bread......

And how are we going to get an agreement on the overall ratio of any one of them to any/all of the others?

I think the "cost" should be based on the overall "cost" to the planet, based on everything that happens from conception to grave.

And it needs to be a worldwide standard otherwise we'll just be shooting ourselves in the foot.

But like you say..... It's all about the money.

My ZT diesel was £215 when I got rid of it. Replacement is a 2l diesel, 160BHP and more torque than the ZT, but £0 tax as it’s 99g/km

I've just paid the tax on my CDTi ZT and it was 'only' £210. The old diesel Mundaneo was even less than that before she expired. I'd definitely go second hand diesel again if and when the Mondeo gets replaced - simple value for money.

I'm only really worried about the Bristol CAZ when that comes in later in the year. I tend to go to quite a few gigs down there, so will have to rethink. Either that or use my daughter's petrol Mini.

I couldn't believe it when I got the car, and initially thought the same as you, but I think it more shows how well they developed engines over a relatively short space of time. Same engine size, similar power output, and the Jag is quicker. The ZT was something like 160g/km, making it band G, the Jag only being 99g/km makes it band A, where there's no charge, about a 40% reduction in the measured unit of emissions from the ZT. I'm not sure how that stands for the future though, it looks like bands D and higher have been steadily increasing but A, B and C have stayed at £0, £20, and £30.

What would irritate me is that the identical car to mine if registered after the 1st April 2017 would then cost £140 a year. For comparison, if a ZT was registered after 1st April 2017 ( I know it couldn't be, but just hypothetically), it would be £555 for a diesel manual! Not sure how much higher the emissions are on the auto, but if they took it to the next bracket (171g/km+), it'd be £895!

I'll admit it seems JLR specifically went after the low emissions with this particular trim/spec as it's just inside the bracket, and they fitted it with a smaller fuel and AdBlu tank than the rest of the range.

My work colleague has a 1.8 diesel Audi. He pays £30 pa as the VAG group said it was Euro4 or 5 compliant. HM Govt never re-classified all those vehicles that would be lucky to achieve Euro 3. No wonder there is now a tax black hole due to EV's increasing in number.

Sighhhhh!

Don't hold your breath that sanity will prevail. My 2004 2.5 x-type estate was in a lower band than my 2006 2.5 x-type estate. Same engine and thus emissions but one falls foul of the Gordon Brown hysteria of 2005.

yes mike ,my kv6 is auto. so it is more to tax. i would have thought my emissions compared to a manual change redlining using vis motors through the gears would be more of a pollution issue. but hey ho ! it is what it is. ...
