Thanks for all your help and advice everyone.
Think we will go with the Nikon D60 more because of price at the moment on offer with the new models just coming out.
The Canon EOS 500D and the Nikon D5000.

What is your thoughts on the better camera to get out of these two Budget Models?

Nikon D60 or Canon EOS450D.
Hi John.
I bought the Nikon as a spare body for my last Africa trip to back up my 200D, and while I didn't need it my wife took a lot of really excellent wildlife shots with it. It's very easy to use in auto mode, but still quite intuitive to use as a manual. The resolution is obviously linked to the price but for "normal", by which I mean at reasonable distances, it performs very well. I'll pop a photo of a pelican that I took with the D60 into my gallery for you to check. (Not photo shopped!)
Hope this helps.

Jeff

The Pelican shots in my gallery were taken with a D60 that i bought as a back up body for my D200.
Easy to use on auto, but quite intuitive in manual mode. Images shot at distance, even with a good lens, will not enlarge well as the resolution just isn't there, but aside from that it's a pretty good camera for the price.

Hope this helps.

Jeff

I have a D60 with a 18-105mm VR lens and it is fantastic very pleased with the pictures it produces.

It is also very well made and has a solid feel to it. The Canon I tried in the shop felt cheaper and not as well made.

The picture quality of both I would imagine is similar. It is the lens that makes most difference. If you buy the D60 Kit make sure you get the VR lens version (vibration reduction) or buy body only and get the 18-105mm VR zoom lens.

Let us know how you get on.

Either camera will produce very good results. But if you do decide to go with the D60, be sure to check out Nikonians.org:

which is a big, very friendly and informative global community of Nikon users
