Default Nght Vision !

A long long time ago I picked up a low light intensifier tube from ebay for a few quid. Since then it was a project I never got underway - until last night! We had a powercut in the evening so what an ideal time to work on a project without other distractions.

What was used:

Image intensifier

OM lens, 50mm 1.8f (wide apeture important for low light - had this broken lens hanging about)

150mm macro lens

And a camera!

Also...
1.5v battery & holder with switch

And a bit of drain pipe (had it cut to size already with lens mount attached. That's as far as I got before)

Feeling a bit like a mad scientist working under candle light, I got to work. Without being able to solder bits I used blue tack and electrical tape to hold the circuits together.

Not bad for a few hours work. Bottom photo shots the same scene without the image intensifier but with the same shutter speed & f-stop. In fact it was so dark I couldn't get an exposure at all without it!

All I need do now is figure out what to do with it. Fallback plan would be security camera for our garage that's always getting broken in to. I'd have to rig a light sensor to it, that's getting complicated.

Also forgot to mention the tube jacks up the voltage to 1000 volts. I had a couple of shocks

Thats a very cool DIY job. I'm amazed at how successful it has been even if only for a bit of fun.
