Apparently, the east side of the UK is a wintering area for them. That includes Porridge land!!

are waxwings the ones where there are two types and one of them is quite rare? Or am I thinking or crossbills? I just thought it was odd because we've never seen them down here and then you mentioned them, maybe the cold weather has messed with their satnav?

UK is definitely a wintering stop for them according to the books. Not sure about different types. You're right about the Crossbills though, there is a Scottish Crossbill variation which is apparently adept at getting into pine cone seeds in the Highlands. I think.
