Default new lens?

I have a Canon eos 400d with the standard kit lens 18-55, and a 90-300. Neither have any scales for focus to allow setting for infinity. I borrowed yesterday a Canon 28-135 which was better than my lenses but they are around £380. I have also used a Sigma 10-20 wide lens but again at around £350 i thought it was expensive for the results. I don't really know what i want but i want something that will replace the 18-55 and be a good addition to my kit. Any ideas?

Well, what would you like to shoot?

Check out this excellent website for a wealth of information about Canon SLR lenses http://www.the-digital-picture.com/ I have used this website numerous times to review lenses and the like. There are guides on what sort of lenses are best suited to different types of photography etc. When you've found a lens /lenses you like you can then try and find reasonably priced sources for them. Often eBay or other auction/private sale websites will have a good choice of second hand ones to choose from but just beware of lenses that may have suffered excessive use or may have been damaged. Be warned though, that this D-SLR lark is an expensive hobby

Your not kidding Simon. I've just taken the step from 35mm to digital and bought a 40D and EF 100-400 IS Lens. :xmas-smiley-015: I have to say though, its a superb piece of kit!!

Maybe the perfect solution is a Sigma 17-70mm zoom. Nice quality and a snip at circa £200. Can also do macro but not perfect 1 to 1. The canon 28-135 would give you an equivilent to 44.8-216mm (on a apsc sensor on a 400D) which imho is too long for a utility lens. The Sigma comes in at 27.2mm - 112mm which is a pretty useful range. Also has a good max apeture of f2.5.

Not in your class but here are my first pic's with the new gear.

The first shot DOF clearly an issue at max aperture @400mm. 2nd shot tried F8 with flash. Both shots autofocus/ deadcentre..
