Default Broken ankle

Does anyone know how long it takes for a broken ankle to mend and any problems to look out for while its mending? My wife fell down our stairs yesterday and has fractured her Fibula where it connects to the ankle bone. They say its a clean break but it also involves torn ligaments. I did ask the hospital but they really didn't want to give us a clue so we are up in the air with holidays etc.

At the moment she has a half cast on but thats coming off next week after the swelling has gone down and they will then put on a full cast as long as the break is still clean and not moved.

I have had a look on the net but it gives times between 2 - 8 months so I am hoping someone on here may have had the same injury and will be able to give us an idea.

Thanks for any help

Ken

Really sorry to here that Ken. I can't answer your question now, but SWMBO is going skiing with her school in a couple of weeks time. I may be able to tell you after that

Hi Ken
Very sorry to hear Doreen is in trouble. Please wish her all the best from me.
I'm afraid it is almost impossible for the quacks to give an accurate time scale as it it relies on several factors. Including, age, general health, severity of the injury etc.
Make sure to dock her wages for the new TV.

Off the top of my head (and I may well be over-pessimistic, but this is based on professional experience, assuming no other health issues), expect 6 weeks in cast if surgery is not required, expect recovery to take a while longer and may perhaps need physio to regain full mobility.

I would say, watch for the cast rubbing (particularly as the swelling goes down, if the cast seems loose go back to Hospital straight away), and be aware of the risks of reduced mobility in general (particularly the risk of DVT).

Wishing your wife a speedy and complete recovery

Karl

Sorry to hear this Ken.

Marion did her ankle some years ago Ken. Called a "twist fracture" or something like that if I recall correctly.

She had a cast on for 9 weeks I think. Apparently straightforward. No problems except devilishly itchy.

Surely they use their arms for all that. I think I had better hide her passport.
