I avoid at all cost. Not enough space for goods, no room to park trolley to unload, infuriating voice (always female) stating "Unidentified item in bagging area".
Another way for employers to get staff to do more for less a great way to reduce costs and pass savings to investors, if you have ever wondered why Britain is least productive of the so called strong economies there is your answer in part at least, work people like dogs give them as little as you can get away with employ an army for so called human resources dept to make sure staff have legally no say in anything and sit back and enjoy the benefits.

I'm not sure they do people out of a job, I don't use them because they are rubbish. Every other item seems to send them crazy, although sainsburys are pretty good.

"Savings passed to investors", don't forget that the large investors are the Pensions companies and they pay some of us.

Hate them with a passion. Had to use one last night, two asda pizzas and a viennetta. Scanned a Pizza and it bleeped. You lass came over, slow as you like. For a joke i said "Sorry can you hurry up please, i'm on Come Dine With Me tonight and need to get home". Her reply was "Here was me thinking you had to cook for that as well"

I use them whoever they have them whenever I'm purchasing less than about 10-15 items or purchasing a load of small items that'll fit on the scale.

They've come a long way from the early ones which were pretty useless. Locally here they've changed them recently with bigger bagging space so you can fit more items on the scale, can fit a good 4-5 full bags now.

Wish the local Iceland had self service tills, I miss a birthday every time I have to buy things from there, usually only 1 or 2 tills open out of the 4 (not enough tills anyway for a large busy Icelands we have here) and the ladies serving love taking their time and having a good old chat. Annoying when you only went in to quickly grab 1 or 2 items and end up stuck in the queues for a good 10-15 mins.

I think the self service tills should ask you if you want a receipt or not though, always find a stack of unwanted receipts on these tills.

I don't buy into this 'doing someone out a job'. Keeps queues down yes!! But I bet like for like supermarkets employ as many people as they always did. Plus supermarkets are generally very good to their staff, they're paid well and have excellent benefits.

I’m pretty sure they do replace members of staff, Deb has the task of working on a normal checkout, if she is manning till one, she has the task of overseeing the self service checkouts, this can infuriate her customers as she has to leave them standing while she goes to attend to the issues with the self service checkouts (which there are many)

None of the staff like the self service tills, they take up far too much room, and need constant attention.

Don’t bet money on it, the more you automate, the bigger the shareholders bonus, we have cut 30% of our workforce in the last three years due to the installation of automated packing cells.

You don’t have to pay a robot holiday pay...
