Default Cannister Purge Valve?

My car has been idle for the last 3-4 weeks while I have been away. I fired her up this morning and she sounded a litlle bit "rattly". It wasn't tappets, and upon further investigation the noise appears to be coming from the Cannister Purge Valve. Would this be normal under these conditions at this time of year or is there a problem looming? I can't say I have ever heard this before, but then again I haven't had the car laying as long without use before.

It's quite normal and isn't anything to do with the cold weather. The petrol vapour recycling system operates automatically whenever the inlet manifold pressure is suitable for drawing the fumes from the rear cannister. You typically hear it operating when stood at tickover. It can be very disconcerting when you first hear it. It's much like a tappet gone bad.

I'm not aware of any time factor, but it's possible that the cannister has to be saturated to trip the system. I'm unclear how it's switched on. Whatever, everything's perfectly normal.

Perfectly normal!
