Default Diesel filling

Just topped up the R75 CDTI for the first time today but I could not top the tank up to the brimmed level due to foaming. This is my first ever diesel but I have topped up hire cars and never seen this problem before.

The initial top up took ages as the diesel foamed and I kept moving the nozzle, tilting it and pulling it out of the filler neck and reducing the flow through it (hence it took an age!). If inserted the nozzle as designed the fuel would foam and cut out the nozzle immediately. As the tank got full the diesel would just keep coming up the filler neck and as I had been at the pump for an age already I cut my losses (other people queuing).

All I can only think is maybe there is a tank breather problem but has anybody else had this issue with their diesels? I have tried searching but not much has come to the fore as yet (still searching).

Thanks in advance for any advice

.

I have no trouble with my Tourer at all,
mind you, I always fill up at my local garage
and the forecourt is slightly sloping, so I park
with the filler cap on the higest side.
Are you pushing the nozzle all the way in?

I reckon this is normal, many times, especially when really low, the diesel 'foams' while filling. It's like you're putting in lemonade! Just have to wait till it settles and top up slowly.

Default Diesel Filling

Jon

I can only guess that it is the shape of the filler neck. This is the slowest filling diesel I've had (but the best looking [MK1 MGZT])

Me neither, on the 75 at any rate.

Had it happen once on my Kia at a very dodgy garage, also loss of power for the next few hundred miles, so it may have to do with the quality of the fuel.

Thanks for the swift replies

I think there must be an issue looking at what you all said, 3 have had no problems and 3 of us have the same issue. One query the people that had no issues are you all driving tourers? (could it be the filler neck on the saloon?).

I wish I could push the nozzle all the way into the filler neck but I cant as the nozzle just cuts out as soon as I start filling

The diesel quality is something that I thought of but as it was an Esso station I would have thought it was OK.

As I have another 400+ miles in the tank now this is something I will have to investigate further but does anyone have any idea what the breathing system is like? (charcoal cannister etc?) I could have a look myself but I dont feel like getting under the car today

Default Diesel Filling

That's wierd then guys

I can gun out on filling the MG for England. If I hold the gun on full rate it will gun out after 2 seconds, regardless of position of filler gun or fuel station, or type of weather or mood I'm in or..... you get the picture

SALOON----Fast as you like.

Sounds like a breather problem.

No charcoal filter on the diesel.

HOWEVER some of the diesel fuels do foam more than others.

Biofuels ???????? Dunno.
