Lightbulb Replacing Engine Options , request for advice...

Hi all,

My lovely 1.8 2005 model (forever Rover) has died!!!. It has blown the gasket, Big end bearings, rings etc..... The entire engine has to come out. I have had quotes to redo the engine and was floored at the price to say the least . (The turbo is fine) I love this vehicle but sadly i either need to sell it ( give it away) OR if at all possible try replace its original 1.8 Turbo engine with another vehicles engine. Does anyone out there know of which replacement engines I can use that necessitates the least amount of technical challenges. Any and all ideas are welcome. I have no problem using Japanese or Korean engines. P.S. I live in South Africa.)

Thanks in anticipation

Rond

What about a known to be good normal 1.8 non turbo engine? You'll lose a few horsepower but your car will live again. My 1.8 is a plodder, but it's entirely adequate.

Could the turbo components be moved over to a non-turbo replacement engine?

I can't answer that question I'm afraid.
I was just thinking delete the turbo altogether and just have a 1.8 non turbo engine.

Seems to me any competent mechanic could do that. If your engine died because of overheating due to a blown head gasket or liner problem, the turbo stuff is probably still OK.

The only question would be the compression ratio of the turbo vs non-turbo engines. Turbo engines always used to have lower compression. Might be OK if you lowered the boost to accommodate the higher compression and always use premium gas. Again, a competent mechanic should be able to sort that out somehow.

Edit: 9.2:1 vs 10.5:1 Lowering the boost a tad ought to be OK.

Lol, the turbo is fine, its the rest of the engine that's popped . I would like to replace the engine with a more locally available engine but i have no idea which one of the Japanese or similar would be able to be fitted....

Modding in any other engine than the Rover would be a horror show. I expect it would be so much work it would probably cost you two or three times the value of the car. Maybe more.

Someone put a Nissan engine in a few years ago, there was also a Fiat engined prototype very early on 😎

Sent from my SM-A326B using Tapatalk

And Freelander engines also fit

An N series engine from an MG6 is a good replacement in K series engined cars. It’s got a turbo and is really just an undated K, with an improved HG etc. There are some threads on the internet about the replacement - MG John did one, if he is still around.
