Unhappy Coolant Leak

For the first time since replacing the inlet manifold with an alloy one, I've sprung a leak from somewhere Only a small amount per week, but enough So, as the car's got the original water pump & thermostat,(13 years old) looks the likely culprits Ah well, joys of ownership

Mine did the oil cooler, so check that, but I was loosing some water and had my hair pulled out trying to find it. Drove MPEG potty for weeks, turned out it was the expansion tank cap! Got a 320 bmw one and sorted for a few quid in 2 mins.

Look for the water staining behind the timing belt covers.

Check your dipstick and look at the colour to see if oil/water are mixing.

Don't think so Bri, changed that for the Land Rover one 6 years ago.

Fitted viton rings to the cap Ron, never lost any from there as far as I'm aware. Oil cooler Never thought, hmmmm

No mixing Graham, all good there BTW, posted those cd's today
Strange thing is, it can go for weeks with no loss, then lose enough to just below the max mark

Don't think the is an oil cooler on the standard 1.8, strange that it goes for weeks, then takes a gulp or two.

I don't know if this will help. Run the engine with the bonnet up. Check the hoses for cracks and leaks. On the 4x4 the radiator head and a pipe was cracked. A relatively simple repair, so might not be the thermostat. Be lucky.

A good time to look is at night with a torch - on these cool evenings you'll see any steam with the light from the torch.

I'm betting it could well be the pump - if I can give you a hand with any bits, you know where I am.
