A tripod you mean?

Personally, it helps me a lot. Nearly all my pictures are on a tripod. Even more important when shooting in low light or using a shutter speed lower then around a 50th of a second to avoid camera shake.

I mostly use a tripod, not just to avoid camera shake, but personally it helps me to compose my shot better. I just like the idea of planting the camera on to it and just taking my time and adjusting the settings and also the tripod head to compose.

Anyway a question to which I guess I already know the answer, I don't use a tripod but have a pukka one and a table top version in the kit I bought last year , my camera is a Nikon D5100 used mainly for taking pictures on holiday and at the various car meets I go to. Would it make a big difference and have you used one in the majority of pictures you have posted on this thread ?

Sorry to hijack your thread
No probs, I like talking photography

Simple answer is no, all picture in this thread and indeed most of my pictures were taken hand held. Except the bird shots which are either taken with the the camera on the ground or on a tripod and fired remotely. This is done so I do not scare the birds but also helps with image sharpness.

I will use a tripod when light levels are low or I need a long exposure, say to blur water. I would use one for landscapes if I knew in advance that is what I was going to shoot. So the one of the church in this thread was hand held but if I went back maybe I would use tripod.

I endeavour to take pics in good light or add flash to increase the light. This means the shutter speed is high enough not to need a tripod.

I tend to pick up the camera and just go walkabout so I like to walk with as little as possible. That is why I bought a smaller camera. Old age and bone idle.

That is how I shoot but others who shoot in a studio or do a lot of landscapes or low light photography will use a tripod most of the time.

I suppose good advice is, if you CAN use a tripod it may well be better to do so but it is not essential if you have enough light.

I meant to say above but forgot, when you take a photo with a wide-angle lens, it makes the viewer feel like they are actually standing there.(sometimes)

Took some of the bluebells down the local woods. Pics are nothing fantastic but it does show the bluebells.

For those interested I used a 30mm, 60mm & 16mm lens (in that order for the 3 shots)
No tripod.
Click on image and go to Flickr if you want to see shutter/apperture

A bit chilly out there today.

I love the third shot
I can see a face with a large nose, low down, in the trunk of the tree in the foreground

There was an old grey haired guy with a staff and three short guys with large hairy feet nearby. Seemed a bit strange

Never tried this before, time lapse.

As I am posting this the camera is clicking away outside for my second effort. I am also reading up on how to avoid the flicker.

Here is my first go.

If you click on the Youtube logo at the bottom of the video it will take you to youtube and it can be viewed larger.

How many frames a second we're you shooting at Paul?
I take it manual focus and manual white balance is used for time lapse stuff?

Camera takes stills and then Lightroom creates the video.

Play back was 24 fps but can be altered to your choice.

I took 200 stills in manual focus and aperture priority.

I can set the camera using my phone. It controls How many pics and at what interval to take them. So my second attempt is 400 shots at 5 sec interval.

Maybe fully manual will reduce the flicker a little more - that will be attempt 3

Nice thing is it takes 5 mins to set up - then go have a coffee while it takes the pics

2nd attempt

400 still shots turned into a video at 30 fps (Appox)

No great difference so I will try full manual control next
