What about stressing the floor/mounting position on the opposite side - that's a lot of leverage to hang on just two holes.

I've done this and so have others, remove the bolt to the shock absorber then get a long bar and lever the whole thing down enough to get the spring out, its easier with two peeps but doable on your own.
You MAY have to remove the caliper so as not to strain the hose.

The shock absorber is already off the car. The caliper is sitting on the ground on a block of wood.

I may be missing something here but since you are removing the subframe anyway, why not just place a jack under the subframe and lower (gently!) As one unit?

With the seized bolts, dont even try whilst on the car. Once the subframe is on the ground, stand on it, and loosen using a breaker bar?

The subframe is now off the car complete with upper & lower arms. I did use a jack but with 2 lengths of threaded rod screwed into the long-
leg subframe bolt holes (I wasn't sure how it would all balance on just the jack, so thought I'd play safe).

Anyway, as for the seized bolts - I'll deal with them later (in a suitably nasty manner ).

Thanks to all for the advice.

You weren't wrong there Steve. The remover thingies arrived just after I'd got the springs out (typical) but I've already put them to use - I rounded the heads on two of the tunnel brace bolts by not checking which direction the impact wrench was set to (it was in clockwise mode ). Whoops.

Yes that would round the heads of a bolt, but Irwins will soon get you out of trouble
